July is Sarcoma Awareness Month: Understanding the “Forgotten Cancer”

At Evergreen Naturopathic, we believe that awareness is the first step toward prevention, compassion, and healing. This July, we are recognizing Sarcoma Awareness Month, an important opportunity to shed light on a rare and often overlooked group of cancers that affect thousands of individuals and families every year.

What is Sarcoma?

Sarcoma is a type of cancer that begins in the bones or the soft tissues of the body—such as muscles, tendons, fat, blood vessels, and nerves. While it can affect people of all ages, sarcomas are especially notable for being one of the few cancers that occur in children and young adults. There are more than 70 subtypes of sarcoma, making diagnosis and treatment complex.

Despite accounting for only about 1% of adult cancers and 15% of childhood cancers, sarcomas are serious, aggressive, and often difficult to detect early. This is why awareness is so critical.

The Importance of Early Detection

One of the greatest challenges with sarcoma is that its early signs can be subtle. A painless lump, swelling, or persistent discomfort might easily be dismissed or misdiagnosed. At Evergreen Naturopathic, we encourage patients to listen to their bodies and seek evaluation for symptoms that linger or feel "off."

Early detection leads to earlier intervention—and better outcomes.

How Naturopathic Medicine Can Support Sarcoma Patients

While conventional treatment like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation is often necessary for sarcoma, naturopathic medicine can play a powerful integrative role in supporting whole-person healing:

  1. Immune system support through targeted nutrition and botanical medicine

  2. Reducing side effects of conventional treatments, such as nausea, fatigue, and inflammation

  3. Emotional and mental health care through holistic mind-body therapies

  4. Post-treatment restoration, focusing on energy, strength, and wellness recovery

Our goal is not only to treat disease, but to support vitality, resilience, and quality of life throughout every phase of care.

What You Can Do This Month

  1. Wear yellow, the official color for Sarcoma Awareness, to show your support

  2. Share information—even one conversation can help spread awareness

  3. Support research organizations, such as the Sarcoma Foundation of America or local cancer nonprofits

  4. Check in with yourself and your loved ones—when in doubt, get it checked out

At Evergreen Naturopathic, we’re here to walk alongside every patient—whether they’re seeking prevention, navigating a diagnosis, or working to restore their health. Let’s stand together this June to honor the strength of sarcoma fighters and raise awareness for earlier detection, more research, and better outcomes.
